Orkney Fisheries Association is a trade body representing the interests of Orkney's fishing fleet.

OFA works closely with fishermen, scientists and other fishing organisations to represent the interests of Orkney's fishing industry, promote sustainable fishing practices and to help improve the knowledge of the marine environment and the species within it.

Our key aims are:

  • Representing Orkney fishermen in local and national decisions

  • To prevent the loss of fishing opportunities and grounds within Orkney

  • Improving the onboard safety of Orkney fishermen

  • Ensuring the sustainability of Orkney's inshore fisheries

  • Increasing our knowledge and understanding of fishing stocks and the Orcadian environment

OFA is affiliated with the Scottish Fishermen's Federation and is a founding member of the Community and Inshore Fisheries Alliance.

To try and avoid any gear conflict OFA has produced a map and directory of where static gear fishing skippers in Orkney are most likely to be working. Skippers all want to help by communciating well so If you are considering undertaking any activity (dredging, surveying, etc) that may disrupt or be disrupted by the presence of static gear please contact us or the relevant skipper. Accurate gear positions can be got from skippers directly.

OFA is proud to have received funding from the EMFF and Scottish Government for its Green Development Strategy project (click here to find out more). OFA has also recieved EMFF funding for EPIRBS, liferafts and autopilots to improve members safety and for installing a freezer on Stronsay. OFA also hopes to provide facilities for fishermen on Krikwall pier in 2019.
