Increasing the Minimum Landing Size
In collaboration with OSF Ltd OFA successfully raised the minimum landing sizes for crab and lobster inside 6 nautical miles of Orkney.
OFA worked closely with Orkney Sustainable Fisheries Ltd to increase the minimum landing sizes for crab and lobster caught within 6 nautical miles of Orkney. This means fewer young individuals will be landed so the fishery will be more sustainable.
The new rules state that Velvet and Green crabs must be a minimum of 70mm wide across their back if they are to be legally landed in Orkney.
Velvet crabs can be measured as shown in the picture to the right- from inside the first horn or spike.
OFA hope to continue this project and increase the MLS for scallops and also introduce a dredge limitation inside 6nm.
